Some 350 Indians attended the 61st anniversary of India’s Republic day on January 22 at the Mt Roskill War Memorial Hall organised by Bharatiya Samaj.

The day was began with the traditional prayers followed by Jeet Suchdev’s welcome speech. Patron Dr. Bruce Hucker, National Party MP Dr. Jackie Blue and Labour leader and MP Hon. Phil Goff as guest of honours on this special occasion.

The Indian National Flag was hoisted senior citizen co-ordinator Kandolaji followed by the Indian National Anthem sung by the whole crowd.

Dr. Bruce Hucker Ex Deputy Mayor of Auckland acknowledged the continuing community work done by Bhartiya Samaj for nearly 17 years and wished it success in future endeavours.

Dr. Jackie Blue expressed her support for all the community activities and presented a certificate of appreciation and gift to Miss Meghana, for her appearance as Bharat Mata (Mother India) over the past five years during the celebrations of Indian Independence Day and Republic Day. Certificates and tokens of appreciation were also presented to volunteers worked at this year’s summer camp (see separate report).

Talented kids under the guidance and supervision of volunteers presented interesting items between the dignitaries’ speeches. The seniors’ also took the stage for various cultural performances such as songs, puppet show and other items in between the speeches.

Labour leader Phil Goff praised the Samaj’s contribution to the community and acknowledged the contribution of Kiwi Indians toward the economy and growth of New Zealand. He presented certificates of appreciation to teachers and youth volunteers, who had put their efforts and skills toward teaching during the summer camp.

Mr Suchdev outlined details of the proposed “cultural based elderly home project” and also encouraged every one present in the gathering to fill out the questionnaire provided to them regarding their inputs toward the project.

Roopa Suchdev proposed a vote of thanks and the event concluded with a delicious lunch served by the Bhartiya Samaj volunteers team.
