New Delhi: India bagged 20 gold medals in the ongoing Commonwealth Games with the fifth day of the sporting carnival on Friday  witnessing a rich haul of  yellow metals as shooters led the charge of the home brigade.

With 46 medals so far, India continued to hold the second position in medals’ tally after Australia, a position traditionally held by England or Canada.

The last gold of the day was won by Omkar Singh. He won the 10th shooting gold for the country while his compatriot army man Gurpreet Singh finished fifth in the men’s 10 metre air pistol event.

Omkar, a Navy man, equalled the Games record in the qualifying round by shooting 584. He shot 97.8 in the final to finish with a total of 681.8. Omkar equalled the qualifying Games record of 584 set by Samresh Jung in the 2006 Melbourne Games.

Omkar and Gurpreet had won the pairs event of the 10 metre air pistol event here on Thursday.

The day also witnessed  Gagan Narang and Imran Hasan Khan winning the eighth shooting gold for India in the 50 metre rifle three position pairs event while Army man Vijay Kumar added the ninth from the men’s 25 metre rapid fire pistol.

India got its 15th gold in the Commonwealth Games on Friday with the women archers beating England to clinch the yellow metal in the morning, starting the day on a positive note.

The team comprising Dola Banerjee, Dipika Kumri and Bombayala Devi won by 1 point over England in a nail-biting finish.

While England had to be satisfied with a silver, Canada got the bronze.

In the women's freestyle wrestling, Alka Tomar (59 kg) and Anita (67 kg) won gold in their respective categories.

India also shone in tennis during the day after the Sania-Lee mixed doubles upset of Thursday night.

Sania Mirza on Friday beat Australia's Olivia Rogowska to sail into the women's singles tennis final in the Commonwealth Games.

She beat Olivia 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 and assured a silver with the win, but the ace tennis star would eye for a gold surely.

Earlier, Somdev Devvarman overpowered Australian Matt Ebden 6-3, 6-1 to ensure a medal in tennis on Friday.

Assured of a silver, Somdev also now eyes a gold through a victory in final.

The men’s doubles event, however, was one of upsets.

Both the pairs — Leander Paes-Mahesh Bhupathi and Somdev Devvarman-Rohan Bopanna — lost their respective semi-finals.
