A FIJIAN previously deported from New Zealand was arrested at Queenstown Airport last weekend, allegedly in disguise and carrying a false passport.

New Zealand police said the 53-year-old man was arrested when he tried to leave New Zealand bound for Australia at 4pm on Sunday.

Senior constable Chris Blackford of Queenstown said a border alert was triggered when he presented an allegedly false Australian passport. He said the Fijian was arrested for an outstanding charge of wounding with intent.

"The man was previously deported from New Zealand," Mr Blackford told the New Zealand media.

"He fronted up with a hat, scarf and sunglasses. He was using an Aussie passport and a very European name." He appeared in the Queenstown District Court yesterday and has been held in custody. State prosecution said the Immigration Department was also contacted. The man has been held in custody waiting to answer the outstanding charge and a new one. He is charged with forgery-related offences.
