New Delhi: India has been put on a terror alert ahead of the New Year amidst intelligence inputs that Pakistan-based outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) is possibly preparing for strikes on Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Goa and Bangalore.

Issuing the warning, the Ministry of Home Affairs has asked state governments to beef up security with special stress on tourist interest spots and celebration joints. The public has been advised to stay alert.

According to reports, intelligence suggests that LeT elements have possibly infiltrated Mumbai and Ahmedabad already. Authorities are carrying intense combing operations in parts of Mumbai.

Security in Karnataka, particularly in coastal areas, was also tightened on Monday after specific inputs.

A 550-member strong para-military force provided by the Centre is stationed ready for action, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa , assuring there were no reports of terror elements entering the state.
